Rationale for the ICS-ULisboa Strategic Planning : The study of Portuguese society and related continents such as Latin America, Africa, and Asia from a historical perspective is a well-established research area at ICS-ULisboa. Historians at ICS-ULisboa have made significant contributions to reshaping our understanding of the transformations of these societies over the long term, contemplating topics that include economic development and the welfare state, the emergence of the working class and unions, elites and society, slavery, gender equality, changing conceptions of citizenship, mechanisms of social distinction, inclusion and exclusion, in national, transnational and comparative perspectives. They have opened new avenues of research on these topics, and their publications have been influential for decades both in Portugal and abroad. In addition, these scholars participated in the public sphere, contributing to fostering critical understandings of the Portuguese recent pasts and their legacies in contemporary societies. The impending retirement in the coming years of a significant number of ICS-ULisboa historians involved in studying these issues is dramatic for the sustainability of this area of research at ICS-ULisboa, with a snowball effect, as these studies are also essential for other ICS-ULisboa areas of research, namely those concerned with inclusion, citizenship and the political and social characteristics of post-colonial societies. The recruitment of a PhD Researcher will be fundamental for maintaining continuity in these key areas at ICS-ULisboa, thus instrumental in consolidating ICS-ULisboa’s profile as a pioneering center in Portuguese and European social science research. In addition, this profile is fundamental to strengthen the research developed within three Thematic Lines - Memory & Legacies, Citizenship and Inclusion & Vulnerabilities -, and other strategic areas– ICS-ULisboa Archival Infrastructure and the planned ICS-ULisboa ERA Chair in Imagination, dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the social dimensions of imagination, where the historical imagination plays a decisive role. Required Scientific Profile : In addition to a demonstrated interest in the topic, the PhD Researcher to be recruited should have: a) a PhD in History; b) a relevant CV in the field of Contemporary History, with particular emphasis on internationalization (e.g. international collaborations and networks, a repertoire of publications in top quality journals and or book publications, experience in project-based research and outreach activities); c) solid methodological training and substantial experience in African, Asian or Latin-American archives; d) proven experience in initiating innovative, cutting-edge, research strands and topics; e) proven experience in teaching post-graduate courses; f) experience in applying to highly competitive funding, both at an international and national levels.??????? Tasks to be assigned : The Assistant Researcher to be recruited will carry out activities in the field of contemporary social history, to continue to disseminate solid archive and field-based research on the historical past and its present imprints in Portugal and related continents such as Latin America, Africa and Asia, in particular those related to social classifications and the fostering of more inclusive societies. These activities include a) designing research projects for national and international calls; b) coordinating research teams and leading the implementation of projects in research and scientific and technological development; c) conducting training activities in scientific research methods and development in this field; d) supervising master’s and PhD students; e) proposing outreach interventions based on results obtained in a research project conducted in this scientific domain; f) contributing to academic management at the ICS-ULisboa.This Researcher will develop activities contributing to Thematic Lines Memory and Legacies , Citizenship and Inclusion & Vulnerabilitie s, to the ERA Chair on Imagination. In addition, this Researcher activities will contribute to strengthen ICS-ULisboa Post-Graduate Studies in History and ICS-ULisboa Archival Infrastructure.
