Job description:In Portugal, where Independent Healthy Aging scores rank among the lowest in the EU, the resulting economic and societal burdens are substantial, particularly in healthcare. Addressing this issue requires multidisciplinary teams capable of international collaboration. The successful candidate will lead pioneering research projects aimed at elucidating the underlying mechanisms of aging-related neurological disorders, resorting to preclinical models with relevant translation to the human context, and a particular focus on age-related cognitive function.The selected candidate is expected to perform scientific activities as: Team coordination: Lead a dynamic research program focused on aging neuroscience, conducting cutting-edge research to unravel the molecular, cellular, and neurophysiological processes underlying age-related neurological disorders. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with experts from diverse fields in particular fostering interactions with the FMUL clinical research programs in neurology, gerontology, immunology and pharmacology to integrate multidisciplinary approaches and address complex questions in aging research.  Mentorship and Training: Provide mentorship and guidance to medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation in aging neuroscience research. Publication and Grant Writing: Publish research findings in top-tier scientific journals and secure extramural funding to sustain and expand research endeavors in aging neuroscience.  International Engagement: Engage with national and international scientific communities through participation in conferences, seminars, and collaborative research initiatives, elevating the institution´s profile in aging neuroscience research.  Coordination of Research Infrastructures: Ensuring access to cutting-edge technologies and resources is critical for conducting high-quality research in translational neuroscience and aging. The coordinating researcher will oversee research infrastructures to maintain the team´s competitiveness and leadership in the field. Teaching and Educational Outreach: Contribute to educational activities, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and public outreach programs, to disseminate knowledge and inspire the next generation of neuroscientists. Scientific Profile:The ideal candidate should possess:A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral-level degree in neuroscience, neurobiology or a related field with international expertise in aging neuroscience,Demonstrated track record of translating findings from animal models to the human context.Over 15 years of independent leadership of a research team, have established themselves as a leader in the field.Post-doctoral experience in a prestigious international laboratory or institution is highly desirable, providing the candidate with a deep understanding of cutting-edge techniques and methodologies in translational neuroscience.Expertise in neurophysiology and neurobiology of aging and its implications for cognitive function is essential.A strong foundation in the interplay between physiological aging and age-related neurodegeneration, and experience with the relevant preclinical models.Demonstrated success in writing and securing competitive funding from national and international agencies is expected.A robust portfolio of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals that reflect a significant contribution to the field of aging neuroscience.Experience in guiding medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty members.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
