The Assistant Professor in Translational Medicine position at FMV-ULisboa, in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA) and the Associated Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS), is strategically placed at the cutting edge research in the One Medicine - One Health concept.This position is instrumental within the CIISA´s Clinical Research Lab (CRL), drawing on a legacy of research excellence that extends over two decades. In the recent span of five years, the laboratory has collaborated with experts from 20 countries and established partnerships with several pharmaceutical companies to pioneer the testing in ex vivo and in vivo environments fostering the possibility of novel therapeutic protocols. The laboratory´s avant-garde strategies have distributed around several fields of interest. Research performed at the CRL aims to improve scientific knowledge in diseases that affect animals and to develop new prevention strategies, discover diagnostic methods, understand pathological mechanisms and unravel new therapeutic approaches.Clinical studies use naturally occurring or experimental animal models of disease fulfilling the basis of translational medicine and contributing for advances in human medical knowledge in a One Medicine – One Health perspective. The CRL congregates several research areas that work under the umbrella of the Teaching Hospital of FMV-ULisboa, which aims to provide the highest standard of veterinary medical care, generating a pool of clinical cases in which research studies on multiple scientific areas can be carried out, allowing for a multidisciplinary approach.The CRL uses all the facilities and equipment of the Teaching Hospital, combining daily clinical activities at the companion animal and equine teaching hospitals with active research, culminating in continuous update on medical diagnosis and therapy of various animal diseases. The candidate is expected to actively collaborate in the existing research lines and to bring new ideas for future projects.His integration into the curricula of the FMV, specifically within the new curricula of the Integrated Master in Veterinary Medicine, in the Clinics Department, ensures that the innovative research and breakthroughs developed will directly enhance the educational journey of students.The appointed candidate will be responsible for imparting both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on lessons on a problem-based approach in companion animals and equine medicine and surgery. Moreover, the new companion animals such as rodents, birds and reptiles that also play a key role as pets nowadays will also be included.With a teaching commitment of four hours per week, this approach guarantees that students receive a comprehensive education that equips them to tackle the forthcoming challenges in veterinary medicine and surgery. Consequently, this position significantly contributes to enriching the academic and research landscape of FMV and CIISA leading to scientific advances in translational medicine.The retirement of several Professors from the Clinics Department in the short term will precipitate a marked depletion in the CRL laboratory´s avant-garde competencies in companion animals’ medicine and surgery, particularly eroding its foundational capabilities in internal medicine, endocrinology and surgery. This depletion not only curtails the laboratory´s output and innovation but also diminishes its leadership and pioneering stance within the crucial sphere of sustainability.Therefore, the engagement of an Assistant Professor in Translational Medicine is not a mere act of substitution but a strategic move aimed at revitalizing the CRL with new insights and methodologies for both present and forthcoming projects. The ideal applicant should be distinguished by a record of research excellence in this area of Translational Medicine through significant scientific achievements, publications in high impact journals, consolidated national and international collaborations, and a demonstrated history of excellence in university teaching and student mentorship.
