Job DescriptionThe successful candidate will conduct research on polar environmental changes and their impacts, strengthening the institution’s capacity and strategy on the topic. This includes designing and executing empirical studies, forging innovative methodologies, and translating research outcomes into practical applications. Additionally, the role entails a significant component of coordination, including management of the Portuguese Polar research through logistical planning, data management, international cooperation, and facilitating Portuguese research in polar environments.Scientific ProfileWe are in search of a candidate who holds a Ph.D. in Geography, Natural Sciences, including Environmental and Earth sciences, or a closely related discipline, with relevant experience at the national and international level in research and research coordination in Polar sciences. The profile should allow addressing a breadth of interdisciplinary topics in the environmental and polar sciences, assessing the impacts of climate change and human-activities on extreme environments. The role demands robust analytical skills, a rich foundation in science communication, and experience in international collaboration. A history of interdisciplinary research collaboration and a portfolio of publications in high-quality journals within relevant fields is expected. Experience in international research and research operations organization is a plus.A collaborative spirit is essential, working within multidisciplinary teams to assess the societal ramifications of environmental changes, while also driving science communication initiatives to boost public engagement and influence policy-making.RationaleThe Polar regions are experiencing fast modifications due to climate change that affect natural and socio-ecological systems. The understanding of these changes and their impacts from local to the global scale is only possible through multidisciplinary international collaboration, which faces large research and operational challenges. Since the changes in the Polar regions have global implications, including the North Atlantic and Portugal (e.g. sea-level rise, changes in climate and ocean currents, and extreme weather events), it is of high importance to Portugal to consolidate its research expertise to address these key scientific issues. IGOT/CEG is at the forefront of Polar research and research coordination in Portugal, with international partnerships and projects, and with its scientists contributing to important research niches. This position within IGOT/CEG will contribute to fostering the institution’s strategy for assessing the impacts of climate change and human disturbances in Polar regions. The incumbent is expected to serve as a conduit between groundbreaking scientific insights and societal consciousness, fostering informed policy-making and community resilience, serving national and European public policies, including those addressing the Polar regions. The pressing need to confront climate change and its extensive consequences underlines the imperative need for this position´s immediate integration in our team.
